Common questions
Accounts, sync, imports, taxonomy and data security.
- Why is my email not recognised? Almost always because there is no account under that address yet. Here is how to tell, and what to do about it.
- How do I import from Bird Journal 1, 2 or 3? Records from the older Windows versions come across when you first create your account — which is why it matters where you create it.
- Does Bird Journal need internet? The installed apps keep a full copy of your journal on the device, so almost everything works offline. Here is the short list of what does not.
- How secure is my data in Bird Journal's systems? What we do with your records, what we do not do with them, and how many copies exist.
- Can I import eBird records to Bird Journal? Yes. The eBird record format needs installing from the library first, and here is why it is not there already.
- How are taxonomy updates handled? Please see the taxonomy updates, how to article.
- Why does Bird Journal tell me no internet connection is available? When you know the connection is fine, the usual culprit is security software on the computer rather than the connection itself.
- Why subscriptions? Bird Journal is free or a fixed yearly fee, and that pays for rather more than an app.
- How accurate are the species counts? Counts are accurate to whichever taxonomy you have chosen as your primary one — which is the only way the question has an answer.
- How many observations and photos can Bird Journal store? Enough that it is not a question you need to think about. Some real numbers, for reassurance.
- Why is the print quality poor on greyscale graphs? Almost always a printer setting rather than anything in Bird Journal.
- I have thousands of records, how reliable is Bird Journal? Your records exist in several places at once, which is what reliability actually comes down to.
- Is Bird Journal available for the Mac? Yes, and it is the same journal as on every other device you use.
- Free and premium: common questions What free covers, what premium adds, and what happens to your records if you move between them.
- How do I update my credit card details? Card details are changed or removed in the Billing section of your account on our website.
- Library publishing guidelines What we look for when you publish a checklist or taxonomy to the library, and the conventions that keep it usable for everybody.
