  1. Ability to sort Firsts report by species

Being able to change the sort order to "by species" would be very helpful for a quick overview, rather than having to open each species in the Species list.

  2. Make scroll bars a bit wider

They can be very difficult to select and move, especially on smaller screens.

  3. Survey Categories

At some point in the future it would be good if you could choose a Survey Category, so you could link Observation and Entry properties to only those categories.

For instance. If you are observatory and you are inputting ringing records, you could have properties like: Ring number, fat, wing length, age, weight...etc, but only have them show in the entry window when you choose the Survey Category: ‘Ringing’? And the same could be done for Moth Trapping, Butterfly Transects and others.

Those categories could also be used for entry searches.

  4. Monthly Summary function

As Bird Journal is organised in months, it would be nice to have a feature where you could write a monthly summary with chosen images and map locations. This in turn could be exported in a format that could be uploaded to a blog or Facebook?

  5. Social Media Sharing from App

I think it would be great if you could share an individual observation or a daily summary on Facebook/Twitter that would include a single photo if you had attached one.

It would also be great if it included your field notes in addition to the standard observation stats.

  7. Export to an alternative folder

I would like to export reports directly to a alternative folder to "downloads" but cannot find out how to create an alternative path. Is this possible?

  8. Location mapping

Is it possible to generate a map of locations without having to log sightings for these in the first instance?

When setting up the database for different countries I first enter all of the locations that I visited or intended to visit.. It would be good if these locations could be viewed on a map first.

Also, from a bird club point of view it would be very useful to be able to generate a map of all of the commonly used locations/sites.

  9. Can we have a World mammals list?

Given that many birders travel extensively and, when doing so record most mammal species that the see, could a World mammals list be included in the library?

  10. Add HBWC to the library

HBWC taxonomy takes its inputs from all available "fixed" taxonomies on a collaborative basis and is under constant review. Have you considered adding an HBW World list to the library?

  13. Add Bird Journal to the Android photo share menu

Selecting a phone photo opens the share option where the image can be sent to any app that supports it, for example Gmail, Facebook, Evernote etc.
This would enable a copy of an image on the phone to be added to a bird entry. This would be particularly useful to show habitat and weather conditions.

  14. Easier selection of historical dates

In the desktop application, it’d be more convenient if the new Entry screen defaulted to the last date the user selected, rather than today’s date. That way, when entering a sequence of historical records, you would not have to scroll through the calendar repeatedly at the start of each entry. It could still default to today when the program is first opened.

In the desktop application, Reintroduce keyboard shortcuts that allow you to jump to a specific property in an observation record, eg, Heard only, which at present require a mouse-click

  17. Have different symbols for different taxon in the Entries menu

At the moment the 'Entries' screen left hand column (the one listing dates and places) has two symbols, a bird for birds seen and a butterfly for everything else. Could it be possible to have different basic symbols for other taxon, for instance paw-print for mammal, dragonfly for dragonfly, leaf for a plant etc?

  18. Allow to create new locations *above* built-in locations

E.g., The United Kingdom has two counties Leicestershire and Rutland. Sometimes these are reported as one and sometimes separately.

What would be nice is to create a new location "Leicestershire and Rutland" and set that as the parent for both of them.

The issue is that as Leicestershire is a built-in location (it's installed from the ISO-3166-2 location pack), it cannot be edited.

A solution could be that built-in locations do not define a parent location anymore, instead they define an "ancestor" location, and the parent location could be set as normal, but only to locations that are a descendant…

  19. Add subspecies to country checklists

The "correct" set of subspecies this is. This may be possible using IOC range data, though there may be the occasional error. But it would allow a starting point for future iteration - we could happily accept amendments.

  20. Group by family in the checklist report

Species are currently sorted alphabetically or taxonomically as per settings, but not grouped.

Should this be an option? Should we group by family even when sorting alphabetically? (I think so)
