Create a link between Apple voice memos and Bird Journal
It would be great to record your records by voice rather than having to have your head down tapping away on your phone. A simple voice message which creates the record using all the current geo tagging as the message is recorded and then transposing it into the BJ entry for that record. It would mean that I can simply log an entry without having to tap in each element.

Allow the import of Song Recordings not just Photos
I love that you can upload photos of species taken but I would also like to be able to add mp3 tracks of bird songs I have recording during my observations.

Allow searching in notes (entry and species)
While properties works well for direct entry it does not work for records imported from other programs where they are or become notes. It would be very handy to be able to search notes for a word or two to assist in editing those records.

Change pin options
When you zoom in on the map of your sightings you have a pin with a number on it which denotes how many sightings which then changes colour the further you zoom in until it gives you individual blue pins for your individual sighting. Could we have an option to just have the blue pins on the map whether you're zoomed in or not so you can see clearer each pin and have a better overall idea of where you have been in the country? (hope this makes sense?!)

Make it easier to change users when multiple users (ie., a couple) are using Bird Journal.
I currently maintain three lists - hers, mine and ours. It is easy enough to enter data in one list and then export it, and import it into the other lists. However, what takes all the time is retyping in the email addresses and passwords. Even remembering the email addresses would be a big time saver.

Create a search option
I noticed that I often find myself searching for a bird within the app. I have never seen an option to search for a certain bird in your seen species tab.
For the birders amongst us who have seen thousands of birds, it would be very helpful to have a search option to look quickly find a certain bird.

100% export of Bird Journal database
Create a 100% export of Bird journal database. Ebird record format export drops nested location names except for the country as well as any custom properties added by the user. The Bird Journal Record Format exports the custom properties but does not export the nested locations. Additionally, it is not a flat export file and appears the only use of the file is re-importing back into Bird Journal.

Filter Locations when adding entries
When creating an entry it would be good to be able to filter the list of locations the same way you can do for adding sightings.
I have a large number of locations and when I am looking for an existing location it is a pain to have to scroll down the list to find the one I want to use

Upload Custom Taxonomy
I have a list of WA state butterflies from BOMNA that I'd like to upload so that I can have a checklist in the app. There is a Custom taxonomy form, but it appears to be for creating a single record which seems useful for single entries for new or very rare sightings, but not usefful when looking at hundreds or thousands of species. How can I bulk upload a checklist?

Include a running species total while recording
In the early days of Bird Journal. While having the entry page open and still recording there used to be a running species total. I really miss this feature, and hope it is something that could be added back in the future.

Flag unlikely birds against the known distribution of the bird
Bird Journal does many things that eBird and associated apps can't do. That's the brilliance of Bird Journal! However, a critical problem with Bird Journal is that it let you record that you saw a Siberian Jay in Central Australia. The data that Bird Journal holds contains the distribution of birds according to users. I think Bird Journal needs to use this to flag to users, "Are you sure?" If someone says, "Yes!" to seeing a Siberian Jay in Central Australia, then that observation can easily be ignored as an outlier until sufficient user sighting have to received to varify…

Summary Page addition
On the Summary Page under Species Progress can you add a line for a user defined category that would be selected from any of the defined locations. This would allow the user to track a life count for a state or province, country or any other specific location of special interest to the user.

Is it possible to search for your "biggest day"? or biggest week? or biggest month?
Is it possible to have the database show your "biggest day" with date? or biggest week? or biggest month?

Bring other wildlife onto the summary screen
I keep moth records on Bird Journal, which hugely expands its use for me.
It would be nice to see the moth records on the summary page though.

Provide separate checklists for Eastern and Western North America
I like to use paper checklists in the field where cellular service is iffy. The full North American checklist prints out at 27 pages. Generating East and West checklists would require that North American birds be regionally tagged in the database, and they would need to have more than one region as there is overlap for some birds that appear in both regions.

Allow names of Species to be re-ordered
- Species List Currently these appear in alpha order but this means all warblers etc are "shuffled" amongst list. It would be preferable if all the related species appeared together.
E.g. Warbler Arctic
Warbler Reed
Warbler Ruppell’s
Warbler Sedge
Warbler WillowIt would be more user friendly to have the option to chose the type of sequence in which the species are listed i.e. to have all warblers one after the other.
The same with doves / finches / gulls etc
Is there a way that this can be done?10 votes
