  1. Sync to eBird & BirdTrack

Bird Journal's import/export from/to eBird & BirdTrack are pretty good.

It's not possible to do this from the mobile apps though.

What would be better is if you could "link" your account to your eBird & BirdTrack accounts, and Bird Journal would take care of "syncing" your records to those systems automatically, and prompting you to review something when needed.

  2. Add eBird entry data (protocol, # of observers, distance/area traveled) etc. to mobile app

Please add eBird entry data (protocol, # of observers, distance/area traveled) etc. to the mobile app, so it isn't necessary to go into the windows application later and add that data for export to eBird.

  3. Metric values

In countries using the metric system such as Australia it would be extremely useful to be able to select metric values rather than converting acres to hectares and miles to kilometres. Its sometimes just a little frustrating..

  5. A filter for the earliest date of a spring migrant

A graph showing the earliest and latest date, for each year, of each spring migrant so that it would be easy to compare.

  7. The ability to import individual cheklists from eBird in desktop

The current ability to import data from eBird into Bird Journal relies on the download of one's complete eBird data set. When birding with others who use the eBird app they share their list (obtained by concensus) with the party. These individual lists cannot be imported without a lot of reformatting to the point that it is easier to input these lists by hand.

  8. Graphs for iOS & Android

Add graphs, like those found on the desktop version of Bird Journal, to the mobile apps, so you can see for example, your species counts by, year, month, location, etc.

  9. Allow display order of custom Observation/Entry properties to be changed

Currently these are displayed in the order that they were entered and cannot be changed. It would be nice to allow the ordering of these to be changed to something more logical afterwards.

  10. Way to view first observation for each year for a species

Whether in the Firsts report, or within the Species section, it would be very nice to see "first observed" date for all years observed to be able to see trends, compare to years with similar weather patterns, etc.

  11. Add a country/location/patch/region first badge

Similar to the newly added Lifer! and Year First! badges, allow firsts for a country, locatation, patch or region to be indicated.

Country First could be added pretty easily.

For patch/locations we'd need to customise which locations you wanted to show firsts for. Perhaps by allowing you to "Favorite" locations? Favorite locations could also show counts on the summary screen.

What do you think? Let us know your requirements & preferences in the comments.

  14. Allow names of Species to be re-ordered

    6. Species List
Currently these appear in alpha order but this means all warblers etc are "shuffled" amongst list.
It would be preferable if all the related species appeared together.

    E.g. Warbler Arctic
    Warbler Reed
    Warbler Ruppell’s
    Warbler Sedge
    Warbler Willow

It would be more user friendly to have the option to chose the type of sequence in which the species are listed i.e. to have all warblers one after the other.
The same with doves / finches / gulls etc
Is there a way that this can be done?

  15. Add support for Code Synonym lists to mobile apps

In order to speed up the selection of species in the field, it would be very useful to have support for the code synonym feature you have on the Windows app, which allows you to define short code aliases for species name.Users would then be able to create and share synonym lists based on standards (such as BTO and BBL) or their own lists.

  16. Photo icon for species list items

Add an indicator on the Species Report to show if there is at least one photograph for that species in any entry. As it is a report it doesn't much matter if it makes the report a bit slower, but there could be a checkbox to turn the feature off.

  17. Auto-download photos

Allow to automatically download and store photos to each copy of Bird Journal as part of the sync process.

Currently they're downloaded and stored as needed when viewed, or all-at-once using the "Download all Photos" item in the tools menu.

  18. Most species in one day

When we click on "Summary" we are shown, among other things, the "Most species in one day". I would love it if in the "Entries section, you could select a year, location, month etc and be given the "Most species in one Day" for the selected criteria. What was my biggest day at a particular site? What was my biggest day in March 2013?

  19. Only display the parent location, allow user to click to display any nested locations

I have hundreds of locations all in a nice hierarchical structure. For example, In the United States (the parent), hierarchy is broken down state, county, city etc. Instead of scrolling through hundreds of locations, how about clicking United States, scrolling to find Wyoming, click to open up Wyoming, scroll to Laramie County, click Laramie County, then click Medicine Bow National Forest. This is how Windows File Explorer works. I do not programs that expand all nested data automatically. Programs that do I wonder why I waste my time with a nested database structure.

One problem with "barfing out" all of…

  20. Add an Ordnance Survey grid reference tool (and perhaps Vice County too!)

This would be useful when exporting records for recording schemes. The six figure reference would be most useful, I think.
