Create a more visual monthly / annual tracking page for each species
It would be nice to have a page with all species listed down the side and months acorss the top, so you can visually see what birds you have seen in a month.
If you are a monthly lister, like me, you can then easily see what species you might want to target next.
I use Bird Journal as my main listing program, but use Excel to create this list. I towuld be great if it is all in the same place.3 votes
Create a button to allow you to tick Complete List while using the iPhone app
Please create a button to allow you to tick Complete List while using the iPhone app. I currently have to log onto the computer to then go back through lists to tick this feature! Thank you1 vote
Summary report showing what species you have seen each year
Could work a bit like the checklist report in that all species could be listed on the left and then years across the top. In each year the species has been seen the little box could be coloured in and in the years the species wasn't seen it would just be the box outline. Scroll down to see the whole list of species, scroll across to see all years. Filters could include years so you could select a start and end year ie. 2010 to 2020 if you don't want to see 30+ years - another toggle could be to show all species (even the ones you have never seen) or you could toggle this to exclude all species you have never seen. A further toggle could be used to include "heard only" in the report
This report would allow you at a glance to see what species you haven't seen in the current year compared to previous years and therefore how long its been since you have seen a species

Have icons for wildlife categories for ease of use to move between.
When I’m using Birdjournal on my patches I record, along with birds, butterflies, bee’s, dragonflies etc. It would be easier to have at least an icon to go to your prefer home category. If you could have a couple other icons that we make life easier and quicker to move between categories.1 vote
Change the pin colour
Any chance of giving us the option of changing the individual pin colours please? Currently the blue pins don’t show up very well against either the outdoors or satellite maps. Red would be better! Thanks1 vote
Species count summaries
On Windows version summarise the number of observations and give a total count for multiple observations of a species in one entry. Could be indented or highlighted on a line either above or at end of that species series of entries. This would bring the Windows version in line with what already occurs in Android and would help in survey work.1 vote

Enable a filter that enable the user to create a list of the birds not seen. A target list to help find in year and life targets.
It’s really annoying towards the end of the year trying to hit an annual target. This year I wanted to break 200 birds (in my case seen by bike or walking from home). For the last month of the year it would have been really helpful to create a tick list of target birds. Sure this would help others !1 vote
Species only Heard are included in the overall species list, it would be helpful to have a settings option to exclude or include these.
Many birders want to record species they have heard, but do not include them their overall species list.
It would improve the product incredibly to have a setting to include/exclude species which have only been heard from the Species summary/list.3 votes
Auto-create locations and species that don't exist
If you enter a location or species name that doesn't exist, Bird Journal should warn that a new location / species will be created, but create them automatically.
This would streamline the experience when adding observations for new locations and new species.
Ideally, taxonomies that are not yet installed, should be searched first for species entered, and auto-install the required taxonomy.4 votes
Allow ability to dig down into filtered searches in app and give correct number of sightings of species based on the filter) (eg show the correct number of sightings of species 'A' in location 'B' [not the total number worldwide] and allow drill down to see detail of the sightings of Species A at Location B.)5 votes
Allow searching/filtering of observations within an individual entry.
Sometimes you may need to edit an entry and find a specific species to make an amendment. Perhaps if you've noticed you entered the count incorrectly or selected the wrong sub species etc for example. If there are a number of species in the entry it can be quite tedious to scroll through them all to find the one you need to amend.
A search bar above the observations panel would make it great just to type a few letters and find the entry you need in much the same way filtering works on the main pages.
Create locations that are dynamic
I live at Lake Tahoe. I like to track the birds I have seen in the whole basin, but that currently isn’t possible as Lake Tahoe covers two states. I want to keep my lists for each state separate, but also be able to view the birds I have seen at Lake Tahoe as one list instead of as the California side and the Nevada side. So, can you create locations that are viewed in the current hierarchy as well as being able to view sightings from two different locations as one list as desired?3 votes
Make porting of records from one taxonomy to an updated one easier.
Just porting my records over from my original Mammals of the UK taxonomy to the new Mammals of the United Kingdom and Ireland checklist from the World Mammals taxonomy and have spotted something that might be a useful change to implement.
On the replace species tool, there are radio buttons to select common or scientific.
It would be useful to have these stay as a previous selection, so they don't have to be re-selected each time (a total of 6 key-strokes if you want to use scientific names for both sides of the swap).1 vote
Create a search option
I noticed that I often find myself searching for a bird within the app. I have never seen an option to search for a certain bird in your seen species tab.
For the birders amongst us who have seen thousands of birds, it would be very helpful to have a search option to look quickly find a certain bird.17 votes
Allow the import of Song Recordings not just Photos
I love that you can upload photos of species taken but I would also like to be able to add mp3 tracks of bird songs I have recording during my observations.12 votes
Entry property is required
When you create custom entry properties it would be good to force them to be required or not. It is very easy when you start listing in a new entry to forget to enter a property. If this was required when you start a new entry (or not) that would make life much easier and allow this customization to work as intended.2 votes
