Create a more visual monthly / annual tracking page for each species
It would be nice to have a page with all species listed down the side and months acorss the top, so you can visually see what birds you have seen in a month.
If you are a monthly lister, like me, you can then easily see what species you might want to target next.
I use Bird Journal as my main listing program, but use Excel to create this list. I towuld be great if it is all in the same place.3 votes -
Species seen since...
In the mobile version we have birds seen this year, this month and this week (but not a day list!) It would be more useful if we could specify a start date for a species count, which would allow us to do trip counts, that don't necessarily start on the first day of a month! It would be even better if we could filter to get the species themselves (although that looks a bit like another suggestion, which is more general).

– Add day filtering to the mobile apps
– Add end date filtering to the mobile appsAre you also suggesting we add a species count for a custom date range to the summary screen? If so, I think that would be best captured as a requirement for:

Scientific Names on Mobile version
At present the mobile version only shows common names for species. Given that there is no standard common name list (some species have multiple common names, some common names apply to multiple species) it would be helpful to show the scientific name in the species entry page to avoid confusion. Ability to search on scientific name would be better yet.

Add a "seen" tab in the mobile app
Since it's common to see the same species at different time during an birding session, so by adding a "Seen" tab in entry screen, we can easily and quickly add a new observation for a species already seen in the current birding session. Currently to record a seen species in the current birding session, we need to key in the name of the birds again.

Add an option to list locations in order of distance from your current position
This would make it much select a location, and would help prevent adding a location twice with different names. Could be linked to a database of other users sites or just include well known sites.

make it possible to list the day's sightings in chronological order.
I'd like to be able to review my sightings made on a particular day in the order I saw them. To a degree I can do this via the map, as long as I remember my route, but I'd like to be able to choose to order the list of sightings like this if I wanted to.

Importing non-standard data
Provide a template(s) for importing data that is independent of other commercial software. Some people have huge amounts of data that is not in 'birding software'.

Make adding a new observation quicker
- When you add a new observation set the initial count to 1, not zero (which is unlikely to be what is wanted).
- When I tap on the 'add note' button, a text entry box pops up but I have to tap again in the box to be able to enter text (Nexus 4, Android 5.1.1). Must be possible to go straight to text entry surely?

Include the number of individuals on the species page
I record counts, and I want to see how many individuals I've seen, in total, on the species screen.
This would be achieved by adding up all counts for the species on view.

Provide a scroll feature in the gallery screen
This would enable a user to more readily view their pictures. Perhaps a full screen option too?

include a location filter in the checklist filter
If the checklist filter also filters by relevant location (e.g. the "Birds of Britain" checklist filtering your sightings for all species on the checklist seen at locations in the UK) then the totals in the checklist graph will be accurate. In this way you can use checklists to generate list totals for a given geographic area (and compare list totals between different checklists).

Print Routine
Make it possible to print a report with or without photographs. This will make it possible to print a concise report using less paper and ink

Add tags that have been appended to photos (from an app such as Google Picasa or Photoshop) to the photos information pane
Sometimes, additional information may be stored with a photograph. It would be useful to be able to view these tags either below the photo in the gallery, or under the photo information.information

More detailed analysis of reports
The new Reports feature in V5 is a major improvement and it gives the opportunity to make the most of a huge amount of data. At the moment you can only create a single report, but in future it would be use full to be able to create multiple reports and combine them
e.g. 1.what species were common between two trips and what were different?
2. How often do two species occur together in entries?
3. At what locations have I seen these species?2 votes -
Allow sharing of a custom list with specific people rather than publish it.
It would allow small groups to share specific lists which dont warrant a more widely published list

Add Bird Journal to the Android photo share menu
Selecting a phone photo opens the share option where the image can be sent to any app that supports it, for example Gmail, Facebook, Evernote etc.
This would enable a copy of an image on the phone to be added to a bird entry. This would be particularly useful to show habitat and weather conditions.2 votes -
