This is a great idea. We’ll include this when updating mobile input screens.

An error occurred while saving the comment Edward King commentedAgreed, I was just thinking that a report like this would be helpful. Ideally one could select a date range (including the current, incomplete year) and see a report with a column for each year showing the date each observed species was FIRST observed. It would be great if it could also be filtered to a specific set of months within each year, and by location/taxonomy. That would (1) allow one to see trends over time for the first-observed date; and (2) identify species that one had already seen "by this time" in previous years but remains unseen in the current year

An error occurred while saving the comment Edward King commentedConsider adding a checkbox or count field for recording when juveniles of a species are observed. I currently use the notes field for that, but that means the data are not filterable.

An error occurred while saving the comment Edward King commentedYes, definitely. Does it have to be locked to filtering by Year as opposed to an open date range? That would surely provide more flexibility to users.

A number of lifer/first features have recently been added and are now in beta:
– Badges and summary on the entry page
– New customisable premium Firsts report
– Enhanced premium Species Progress graph (Formerly Intra Year Species Progress)We plan to add notifications while entering as well a little later. This suggestion captures this intent.
An error occurred while saving the comment Edward King commentedI can see various ways to implement this. One approach would be "conditional formatting" or a flag/icon that highlights a species whenever it is recorded for the first time (or a pop-up as Jeff suggested). If the flag showed up throughout the program, this would also help to retrospectively identify lifers in individual existing entries/reports (not just new records). In addition, a custom report that focuses on "first recordings" might be very useful. For example, a Life List report could list the first sighting of every species recorded, with the date and location noted (maybe list in reverse chronologically order with headings for years). And if you enabled filters to be applied, then this same report could become a year list (by filtering by year) or a country/location list (by filtering by country/location).

An error occurred while saving the comment Edward King commentedHi Justin - you're absolutely right that it is possible to change the number of "line" that each click of the wheel represents; that's available in Control Panel | Mouse | Wheel (tab). I am pretty sure that I had not changed that from the default, however, which was 3 lines. So the concern would be that other users with default settings might experience the same as me. The good news is that changing it to 2 lines did improve scrolling in the BJ5 calendar so that it scrolled back by 1 entire month. So that fixes my problem; I'm still not sure how many (if any) others may experience the same. If they do, at least we know now how to fix it!.
An error occurred while saving the comment Edward King commentedSorry for the late reply. This is on Windows. I misspoke slightly in my original comment; it's actually even harder than that to select a recent past date in BJ5... If I start a new entry, the date field appropriately defaults to Feb 18. Clicking the dropdown displays the calendar for the full month of February. But let's say I want to create an entry for Jan 31. Using cursor keys doesn't actually work to move up a few rows to January. And if I use the mouse wheel instead to scroll up, the calendar display jumps directly to show Dec 13-Jan 23. The only way to select a date in the Jan 24-31 range is to select a different date such as Jan 23 and then manually edit it

Great suggestion. I think there are a few keyboard only improvements we can make generally for the checklist view.

An error occurred while saving the comment Edward King commentedWith regard to the original poster's suggestion that the initial count should be set to 1, not blank, by default if not actively entered for a new observation, a refined approach might be to let this be a user-configured setting, ie, let the user specify that when the number is not actively entered, the count is set either as blank or as 1. I agree that for most users, 1 is likely to be the "correct" default, unless they actively specify a higher multiple

Thanks for the great suggestion Edward.

When you are creating a new entry in the app, it is a bit of a pain to scroll through all your previous locations to select the one you have used, especially when you have many previous locations. I think it would be much easier if you could start typing in the location field and (after you have entered, say, 3 characters) see a filtered list of previous locations that match, so you can pick the one you want -- just like when entering species names. If the user does not pick one or there is no match, the field could then default to creating a new location using the text entered, as it does now.
