  2. Allow enlargement of photos in Desktop (et al) version

The size that you can currently view photos is limited: I would like a zoom facility...please.

Bird Journal only stores photos at a resolution suitable for display on most screens. Zooming in would only look blurry.

If you would like to see Bird Journal store higher resolution photos (and have the resulting ability to zoom in) then please create a new suggestion for that.

  3. Reduce mouse clicks in data entry (simple fix)

When we click on "New Observation" could the cursor/caret/focus automatically jump to the species text box. This is how it was in V.4

It only saves one mouse click but if I'm entering hundreds of observations from paper list etc it saves a lot of time.

I imagine it would be much less often that a person would click "New observation" and then want to change to checklist view or change the taxonomy.

This is already the behaviour on both Mac & Windows V5 desktop software. If it’s not working for you, please email with details on how to reproduce the issue and we’ll take a look.

  5. add fish checklists

I can't see any freshwater (or sea) fish checklists in the library. Don't any Bird Journal users record fish?
(Would this require the creation of new fish taxonomies?)

    Hi,

I’m sure there are a number of users doing this with Bird Journal.

We only issue and maintain the bird taxonomies. Non-bird taxonomies are contributed by users. It’s actually possible to make your own custom taxonomy for this – have a look at Library > Custom > New Item, Taxonomy, From Scratch.

Note: The editor requires individual taxa per line, which means e.g. Genus & species would be on two separate lines.

If you create something that’s complete, please do consider publishing it (publish button) so that other Bird Journal users can benefit from it.

    Hope this helps.

    Best wishes,

    Justin

You’re welcome to create one and publish it for others to enjoy too. Go to Library > Custom. Press New Item then select Checklist and either From Scratch or Copy Existing to use an existing checklist as a base.

    Best wishes,

    Justin

We only maintain the bird taxonomies. Feel free to add something for this via the Custom tab in the library on the desktop apps.

If you get something complete, please publish it and we can make it available to other Bird Journal users.

    Best wishes,

    Justin

  11. Include a status field: breeding, resident, summer visitor, winter visitor, vagrant

Would like to be able to enter a status so that I could pull a report of, say, the breeding birds for a particular site

  12. Auto loading geotag information from geotagged photo's when entering a geotagged observation photo.

As a user of a camera with geotagging, adding the geotagging from the entered photo would be better than guesstimating the location on the map. I have itchy feet and tend to walk along a river with the camera ready that sit in one spot. :)

    Hi Ian,

This is already possible, or at least should be. When you add the photo the lat/long should be added as a geotag.

If you’re not seeing this please email us with a sample photo and whether you’re running on Mac or Windows and we’ll take a closer look.

    Best wishes,

    Justin

  13. Single Site checklist record input from birds seen before

I go to the same site very often so the same birds each time i visit. It would be nice to have a simple input checklist that shows just the birds you have seen at that location before

This is already possible. Press the checklist name then:
    – On the desktop apps enable the likely filter. You need to have seen at least 30 species for a location before this option is available.
    – On the mobile apps select a location from the location filter.

    Best wishes,

    Justin

  14. How can I enter subspecies in the mobile app?

When entering data on my 'phone or tablet when away from home only full species appear to be available (e.g. pied wagtail show alba only). Can I adjust the settings or do I simply have to make changes when back at base?

    Hi Alf,

I’m closing this suggestion as it’s already possible.

When entering observations, tap the top row where the name of the checklist is shown. Then enable the subspecies switch.

Subspecies are only available where supported by checklists, as on the desktop app.

    Hope this helps.

    Best wishes,

    Justin

  15. Could we have Bird Journal appear in the share menu on Android. Better still be able to launch the phone camera direct from Bird Journal.

This would be useful for recording habitat and current weather conditions

    Hi,

Great ideas. Can you please add these as separate suggestions so they can be independently voted for and updated? I think there may already be a suggestion for taking a picture from the mobile apps.

    Best wishes,

    Justin

  16. The new layout will not allow 1/4 acre for area. I prefer to own full software and pay for updates rather than have subscription service.

I'm a long time user of the app on iPhone. I prefer to own full version of a software and pay for updates rather than a yearly subscription in order to have full features. Disappointed that this is no longer the case.

Wish there was a "Life List" or other "List" capabilities.

    Thanks for the feedback Sharon.

The main suggestion here appears to be to revert the pricing model to a one-off payment, which we’re not planning, hence declining the suggestion.

We’ve fixed the issue preventing 1/4 acre input – you can get it early here: https://www.birdjournal.com/get-beta

There’s an open suggestion for a life list count already. Please vote for that and/or create additional specific suggestions:

  19. Allow NewEntry to remember the date used

Going through my note books to enter my records I'm going backwards in date but every time I add a days records i.e 13th Jan then enter it and then want to add the 12th Jan I have to scroll back through the calendar again. Can the calendar be sorted to have an option to start from the last date entered? (Originally suggested by Ian Bennell)

It’s possible to enter a date directly by typing. This should represent only a fraction of the time compared with adding observations.

This combined with historic data not being the primary use-case mean choosing not to address this.

  20. iCloud based back up server

A way of storing information on an iCloud based server. I could then access this when I needed to buy a new computer or phone, even if I changed from an Apple to Windows and vice versa.
