Only display the parent location, allow user to click to display any nested locations
I have hundreds of locations all in a nice hierarchical structure. For example, In the United States (the parent), hierarchy is broken down state, county, city etc. Instead of scrolling through hundreds of locations, how about clicking United States, scrolling to find Wyoming, click to open up Wyoming, scroll to Laramie County, click Laramie County, then click Medicine Bow National Forest. This is how Windows File Explorer works. I do not programs that expand all nested data automatically. Programs that do I wonder why I waste my time with a nested database structure.
One problem with "barfing out" all of…

Metric values
In countries using the metric system such as Australia it would be extremely useful to be able to select metric values rather than converting acres to hectares and miles to kilometres. Its sometimes just a little frustrating..

Increment count in App
I am using the android app for survey entry in the field (yay notebook never leaves pocket!!). It would be extremely useful once a species is entered in an entry to have a increment button in the entry list to simply add to the count for a selected item in the species list as a new bird is encountered rather than having to enter the species and change the count.

Keep location filter on
When working a site it would be useful to be able to keep the site filter on. Each time after a save you need to reapply filter

Photo icon for species list items
Add an indicator on the Species Report to show if there is at least one photograph for that species in any entry. As it is a report it doesn't much matter if it makes the report a bit slower, but there could be a checkbox to turn the feature off.

Printing data
Have the means of printing a report/list of sightings to paper via a word doc or rtf that is more economical with paper more like Avisys used to do.

drag and drop species to sub species
You have been on a trip added all your birds, you get home now you want to move them to sub species. At the moment this is a very slow job.

Add a country/location/patch/region first badge
Similar to the newly added Lifer! and Year First! badges, allow firsts for a country, locatation, patch or region to be indicated.
Country First could be added pretty easily.
For patch/locations we'd need to customise which locations you wanted to show firsts for. Perhaps by allowing you to "Favorite" locations? Favorite locations could also show counts on the summary screen.
What do you think? Let us know your requirements & preferences in the comments.

"Year Firsts Count" graph
Add a new "Year Firsts Count" graph. It would look much like the current Year Species Count graph, but instead of showing the species count for each year it would show the number of lifers/firsts (filterable) for each year.
After discussion via Facebook & Twitter this was considered a "nice to have" rather than "must have", etc. Feel free to vote for it if you would like to see it added!
(It's pretty easy to do.)

Create property "Exclude"
Create a special property "Exclude" that removes a record from all totals, badges etc. This would allow people to include thins like heard-only, NTVs, escapes etc., but not have them added to totals etc.

Allow to create new locations *above* built-in locations
E.g., The United Kingdom has two counties Leicestershire and Rutland. Sometimes these are reported as one and sometimes separately.
What would be nice is to create a new location "Leicestershire and Rutland" and set that as the parent for both of them.
The issue is that as Leicestershire is a built-in location (it's installed from the ISO-3166-2 location pack), it cannot be edited.
A solution could be that built-in locations do not define a parent location anymore, instead they define an "ancestor" location, and the parent location could be set as normal, but only to locations that are a descendant…

Sync to eBird & BirdTrack
Bird Journal's import/export from/to eBird & BirdTrack are pretty good.
It's not possible to do this from the mobile apps though.
What would be better is if you could "link" your account to your eBird & BirdTrack accounts, and Bird Journal would take care of "syncing" your records to those systems automatically, and prompting you to review something when needed.
22 votesThis is something we’re considering. For technical reasons we’d need to hold a copy of your eBird/BirdTrack password to make this possible.
Is that something you’d be comfortable with?
It’s obviously not ideal, but we’d make sure everything is fully secure.

Allow display order of custom Observation/Entry properties to be changed
Currently these are displayed in the order that they were entered and cannot be changed. It would be nice to allow the ordering of these to be changed to something more logical afterwards.

Add facility to merge lists
I have imported data into Bird Journal from eBird and am finding that on some occasions (due to the way the data was uploaded to eBird) I have multiple entries for the same location on the same date. There's no way to combine this data to produce the 'composite' list for the day in question.

Add an Ordnance Survey grid reference tool (and perhaps Vice County too!)
This would be useful when exporting records for recording schemes. The six figure reference would be most useful, I think.

Update the British Counties, especially in Wales.
Some of the Englishcounties and most of the Welsh ones are missing, and could do with updating.

Have the program notify you when a bird is a life bird
Most of the other programs I have used have a small pop-up that says lifer or life-bird when a species is recorded for the first time. I don't see that happening on the Mac version at least.
22 votesA number of lifer/first features have recently been added and are now in beta:
– Badges and summary on the entry page
– New customisable premium Firsts report
– Enhanced premium Species Progress graph (Formerly Intra Year Species Progress)We plan to add notifications while entering as well a little later. This suggestion captures this intent.
