Target species
Introduce features that help you see more species. Specifically to answer the following questions:
- Which country has the most species that I have yet to see?
- Which species have I not seen, in a particular country?
- Where should I go to see a particular species?20 votesThis feature is now available in the v5 desktop apps as a new premium checklist report.
Please create new suggestions to cover anything you feel we missed / would like to see. There’s plenty of scope for extending this.
Best wishes,

Default "Location Filter" to the current site
When creating a new entry, could the Location Filter be set to default to the current site. Most of the time people doing the same site see birds already on their list. On the odd occasion that someone sees a new species, they would then either have to change the location filter, but I'm guessing this won't be the norm'. New sites would need to default to the next level up (or have no filter).
1 voteThis is now possible as part of the version 5 software.

enable adding sub-family/order data
The ability to add more taxonomic details such as sub-family / order is essential when trying to record invertebrates such as Australian moths where there are no english names and taxonomy is quite confused!
4 votesIt is now possible to create order taxa within taxonomies using the version 5 software.

Life list count running total
I think it would be interesting to have a graph that provides a running tally of the life list. So time on the x axis and number of life birds on the y axis, so one can look at "progress" over time. Alternatively (or additionally), it would be nice to have BirdJournal provide your life count on a certain date or over a date range. There are times when, after a big trip, I wonder how many lifers I got on that trip and right now there doesn't appear to be a good way to really get at that number.

iPad version
Create a iPad version of the mobile app to fully take account of the much better resolution on the device.
And better still would be to add some of the Windows functionality around managing entries, editing of geotags in particular (by selecting from a map) would be good.
26 votesThis has now been completed and an update is available in the App Store that makes full use of the iPad screen.
If it doesn’t yet show as an update then wait a few hours to let the App Store update – this is very hot off the press!
We didn’t add any desktop features as part of this. If you’d like to see that then please vote for or create the relevant suggestions.

USe BTO 5-letter abbreviations for faster entry
Add the 5-letter bird name abbreviations to the bird names so you can search by those rather than the full name of the bird (e.g. RUDSH for Ruddy Shellduck) - or any of the other standard abbreviation systems.
0 votesThis is already possible using synonym packs available in the Bird Journal library, with thanks to Jonathan Davidson.

Allow insertion of lines into taxonomic lists
when creating or editing taxonomic lists it is currently required to add a new species to the end of the list and then move it up into the correct place one line at a time per click.. if someone were to add a new swallowtail to the
European Butterflies Taxonomy. this would require the new species to be moved up the list over 400 times as the list is now approximately 450 species long. it would be a massive help if you could simply insert an extra line into the database where it was required and then fill the data…4 votesIt is now possible to insert items (and re-arrange generally) in taxonomies using the version 5 software.

Create a Web version
Now that the data is centralised, a web version should be possible. I guess the pricing model may need to change to a subscription one or maybe make it a cut down version available to people with the desktop version?
19 votesThis is now available in public beta at https://app.birdjournal.com

On the Geotagging/map screen, have an enter by name box for location
would it be useful to have an 'enter by name' (of location) box? Easier than using the zoom tool! The ability to select a less precise OS map reference might be useful too.
3 votesThis is now possible as part of the version 5 software, just press the magnifying glass to search.
Please create a separate suggestion for less precise OS map references if still required. Note however that for the UK at least, it is already possible to enter OS grid references with varying levels of accuracy, e.g., with 2, 4, 6, 8 or 10 numerical digits.

Birdlife Australian list
Add support for the Birdlife Australian list. This is updated frequently and is often the preferred choice over Christidis and Boles.

Option to Arrange Lists Chronologically
Under species view if I'd like to be able to list birds by date of sighting. Then I can easily determine if I just seen a bird for the first time this year or the first time ever etc. ......or in reverse order so I can easily see when was the last time I saw a particular bird. Perhaps by clicking on "Last sighting" or First sighting" the list could be displayed in ascending or descending chronological order.. (May also need an option to restore the users default order or alphabetical or taxonomic)
14 votesWhile not implemented exactly as suggested, it’s now possible to view lifers in this way using the new lifers/firsts report.
Please create a new suggestion for allowing to sort earliest first, if that’s something you’d like to see. Only most recent first is currently supported.
Best wishes,
Justin

Custom Report Generator
E.g. Under "Entries" I might want to select a particular species and select records marked with the "interesting" property (or any other property) and then view a report showing not only a list of entries but also the notes, counts, etc for those sightings (all on one page).
24 votesThis is now possible as part of the version 5 beta software:
https://twitter.com/Bird_Journal/status/708013091531984900This feature will be generally available in an update shortly.
There is plenty of scope for extensions of the new “reports” tab. Please create new suggestions/vote for reports/features you would like to see.
For example, new reports could help identify target species, such as in this suggestion:

On the desktop version be able to filter/search in the edit locations dialog box
I have possible hundreds of locations in many countries on 6 continents ( not Africa, yet!). If I need to change a location it's very tiresome trying to find them without being able to filter
7 votesIt is now possible to search for locations in the upcoming version 5 software.

Option to download all photos
Add an option to download all photos to another computer or device and sync when new photos are added. The current behaviour only downloads photos when they're viewed for the first time.
12 votesDownloading and storing all photos to each copy of Bird Journal is now available as an update. If you would like to do this automatically as part of the sync process, please vote for this suggestion: http://support.birdjournal.com/forums/262707-general/suggestions/7197664-auto-download-photos

Allow taxonomic sorting on mobile versions
Currently the birds are arranged alphabetically, but you tend to see families of birds in the same locations (and you tend to remember them in taxonomic groups too). Any taxonomy would be an improvement on alphabetical sorting.
38 votesThis is now live in both the Google Play and Apple App Stores! To enable the feature, select taxonomic ordering in the options section of the observation input screen.
If you want taxonomic ordering of species generally, this can be enabled using the Windows software. Go to Account > Settings > Personalistion.
Don’t forget that you get your votes back to spend on something else, now the item is completed.
Next up is the combined Mac/Web/Windows software.
Best wishes,
Justin
