  1. Change pin options

When you zoom in on the map of your sightings you have a pin with a number on it which denotes how many sightings which then changes colour the further you zoom in until it gives you individual blue pins for your individual sighting. Could we have an option to just have the blue pins on the map whether you're zoomed in or not so you can see clearer each pin and have a better overall idea of where you have been in the country? (hope this makes sense?!)

  2. Include a running species total while recording

In the early days of Bird Journal. While having the entry page open and still recording there used to be a running species total. I really miss this feature, and hope it is something that could be added back in the future.

  3. Allow searching in notes (entry and species)

While properties works well for direct entry it does not work for records imported from other programs where they are or become notes. It would be very handy to be able to search notes for a word or two to assist in editing those records.

  5. Create a link between Apple voice memos and Bird Journal

It would be great to record your records by voice rather than having to have your head down tapping away on your phone. A simple voice message which creates the record using all the current geo tagging as the message is recorded and then transposing it into the BJ entry for that record. It would mean that I can simply log an entry without having to tap in each element.

  6. 100% export of Bird Journal database

Create a 100% export of Bird journal database. Ebird record format export drops nested location names except for the country as well as any custom properties added by the user. The Bird Journal Record Format exports the custom properties but does not export the nested locations. Additionally, it is not a flat export file and appears the only use of the file is re-importing back into Bird Journal.

  7. Make it easier to change users when multiple users (ie., a couple) are using Bird Journal.

I currently maintain three lists - hers, mine and ours. It is easy enough to enter data in one list and then export it, and import it into the other lists. However, what takes all the time is retyping in the email addresses and passwords. Even remembering the email addresses would be a big time saver.

  8. Make YouTube video around the app as some features are not easy to use

Example adding sightings to previous entry found by mistake no need to enter new entry for same site just need to edit previous entry for that site and add sightings
Also help full if in Entry Summary the species could be add along withthe the time and number of species seen

  10. Upload Custom Taxonomy

I have a list of WA state butterflies from BOMNA that I'd like to upload so that I can have a checklist in the app. There is a Custom taxonomy form, but it appears to be for creating a single record which seems useful for single entries for new or very rare sightings, but not usefful when looking at hundreds or thousands of species. How can I bulk upload a checklist?

  12. Allow names of Species to be re-ordered

    1. Species List Currently these appear in alpha order but this means all warblers etc are "shuffled" amongst list. It would be preferable if all the related species appeared together.

    E.g. Warbler Arctic
    Warbler Reed
    Warbler Ruppell’s

    Warbler Sedge
    Warbler Willow

It would be more user friendly to have the option to chose the type of sequence in which the species are listed i.e. to have all warblers one after the other.

The same with doves / finches / gulls etc
Is there a way that this can be done?

  14. Flag unlikely birds against the known distribution of the bird

Bird Journal does many things that eBird and associated apps can't do. That's the brilliance of Bird Journal! However, a critical problem with Bird Journal is that it let you record that you saw a Siberian Jay in Central Australia. The data that Bird Journal holds contains the distribution of birds according to users. I think Bird Journal needs to use this to flag to users, "Are you sure?" If someone says, "Yes!" to seeing a Siberian Jay in Central Australia, then that observation can easily be ignored as an outlier until sufficient user sighting have to received to varify…

  16. Allow 'in the field changes to species' Position/Time on iPhone/Android

Having just returned from Brazil I had several occasions where I inadvertently added the wrong bird species in using live position/time. Later in the day(s) I was informed of the errors, and whilst I could add in the correct species for that day I could not remove the other 'incorrect' species in the field as I would loose the time/position it was seen to add to the correct species with the same position/time. It would be REALLY helpful to have the ability to 'modify in the field' the species you initially entered and replace it correctly without having to add…

  17. Allow for Genus or "Group" level observations

For larger flocks of Gulls or Geese allow for an observation of Larus spp. or Branta spp. (or some similar, lower level identification). This would allow for better integration with eBird and data collection.

  18. Include a hybrid map option on the desktop version as is used on the app.

Whilst adding my older records on the desktop I'm having to use a map app on my phone to find sites where I've seen certain birds as it's quicker than having to flick between the 2 map options available. A hybrid option which is used on the app would be an excellent addition and save me and others time.

  19. Oceans of World added as Parent Location

As a cruiser I have records of many seabird species from Antarctica to Arctic. Having Ocean as Parent it would be easier to place eg Bering Sea in Pacific.

  20. Only display the parent location, allow user to click to display any nested locations

I have hundreds of locations all in a nice hierarchical structure. For example, In the United States (the parent), hierarchy is broken down state, county, city etc. Instead of scrolling through hundreds of locations, how about clicking United States, scrolling to find Wyoming, click to open up Wyoming, scroll to Laramie County, click Laramie County, then click Medicine Bow National Forest. This is how Windows File Explorer works. I do not programs that expand all nested data automatically. Programs that do I wonder why I waste my time with a nested database structure.

One problem with "barfing out" all of…
