Can you provide an update on when the IOC and Clements taxonomies will be updated? It's been almost 2 years since the last updates. Thanks
It seems as though updates have ground to a halt again. If Bird Journal is no longer going to be updated is there a way the taxonomy can be opened up to allow users to create a clone of it and edit it themselves the same way we can with taxonomies created by other bird journal users?
5 votesSorry for the delay on this. IOC 13.2 is now available in the library as an update. Press Library > Updates then Update All to get it.
We've started work on 14.1 already so that it can be available once officially released. Corresponding checklist updates and Clements updates will follow.
If species/subspecies you have used need attention due to possible splits, lumps, etc, then on updating you’ll be prompted to review these using the desktop app. You can open the list of taxonomic update issues at any time via Tools > Taxonomic Updates. There is also a list of changes that affect species/subspecies you’ve used on the Change Details tab.
For more information on taxonomic updates see our guide: http://support.birdjournal.com/knowledgebase/articles/919095-taxonomy-updates-how-to
Please refer to IOC species updates https://www.worldbirdnames.org/updates/species-updates/, subspecies updates https://www.worldbirdnames.org/updates/subspecies-2/ and master lists https://www.worldbirdnames.org/ioc-lists/master-list-2/ if you’re not sure if a split is relevant to your records or not.

enable adding sub-family/order data
The ability to add more taxonomic details such as sub-family / order is essential when trying to record invertebrates such as Australian moths where there are no english names and taxonomy is quite confused!
4 votesIt is now possible to create order taxa within taxonomies using the version 5 software.

Option to Switch Off Life Ticks
Am I the only one to find these recent additions irritating ?
Having bird and nature watched for 50 years and used Bird Journal for less than two you can understand that BJ is not in synch with my memories.
Justin has suggested I do a brain dump of every species I can recall seeing into BJ to stop the Life Ticks appearing. This seems an incredible amount of work when an option to just switch them off would be very simple.
Not exactly overjoyed at the Year Ticks either but I can live with those although I would not…4 voteshttps://twitter.com/Bird_Journal/status/794633928518864896
This is now finished and with beta testers. If you would like to get it early, you can via: https://www.birdjournal.com/get-beta
Just bear in mind that all apps should be updated to the beta to avoid saving settings in older apps from clearing your preference.

Choose first day of the week
In the summary page "sunday" is the first day of the week.
In many countries "monday" are the first day of the week.
Making this an option would make the "This calendar week" more precise for alot of people.
4 votesWe’ve made Bird Journal respect the first day of the week typically used in different cultures. The hope is that this will satisfy the majority of users.
If this isn’t sufficient and you would still prefer an option for this, then please post a new suggestion.
This change will appear in the next update of each of the apps/software.

Allow insertion of lines into taxonomic lists
when creating or editing taxonomic lists it is currently required to add a new species to the end of the list and then move it up into the correct place one line at a time per click.. if someone were to add a new swallowtail to the
European Butterflies Taxonomy. this would require the new species to be moved up the list over 400 times as the list is now approximately 450 species long. it would be a massive help if you could simply insert an extra line into the database where it was required and then fill the data…4 votesIt is now possible to insert items (and re-arrange generally) in taxonomies using the version 5 software.

On the Geotagging/map screen, have an enter by name box for location
would it be useful to have an 'enter by name' (of location) box? Easier than using the zoom tool! The ability to select a less precise OS map reference might be useful too.
3 votesThis is now possible as part of the version 5 software, just press the magnifying glass to search.
Please create a separate suggestion for less precise OS map references if still required. Note however that for the UK at least, it is already possible to enter OS grid references with varying levels of accuracy, e.g., with 2, 4, 6, 8 or 10 numerical digits.

Bird names
I've started using the new IOC British list but I wonder if the common names could be changed from the American names to what were used to in Britain please?
2 votesThere’s a synonym pack available for this for a while now. Search in the library for Birds of the United Kingdom (IOC), British Names or just switch the type to “synonym packs”

Geolocation-stamping separate sighting of same species
Option top allow observers to geolocate separate observations of the same bird, rather than adding them to the running total.
2 votesThanks for helping out here Craig, yes that’s correct, it is possible to add more than one observation for a particular species in an entry. Though the feature is a little hidden on the mobile apps.
In the mobile apps if you press the + button on the left when inputting, rather than the row generally, a new observation will be created for that species, with a new geoTag and time. You can then step through each using the arrows at the bottom.
In the desktop apps you can just enter the name of the species again, when inputting, to get another observation.
Hope this helps.
Marking this as complete. Feel free to get in touch if there’s anything you feel I’ve not covered.

Birdlife Australian list
Add support for the Birdlife Australian list. This is updated frequently and is often the preferred choice over Christidis and Boles.
2 votesThe BARC checklist is now available in the Bird Journal library to install. (For a few months now)

I am still absolutely delighted with Bird Journal. For a complete I.T. Luddite like me, I can still use the database,
Please don't make it complicared.

Allow sub-zones within locations
After 2 years of 'casually' recording species presence/absence on a 38ha site 'Wallaroo' I now want to accurately record with others, species abundance in 9 smaller sections/zones (A, B, C, etc. through to I)
1 voteThanks for helping out here Craig, yes that’s correct, from the description at least, this sounds already possible.
Please see this video which contains a good demo of the location hierarchy: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XO7vbwMEcmA
Feel free to get in touch if you still have queries, or to make a new more specific suggestion.

Solved - Enable SSL for logging into the bird journal support page
SSL is not enabled when logging in to the support page meaning our passwords are not encrypted when sent over the internet. Edit: 21/05/23 - I see this has been addressed. Many thanks
1 voteThanks for your patience, this is now in place!

provide a Journal for Plants, Animals, etc
I would be nice to identify other forms of nature such as animals, reptiles, insects, and plants.
1 voteHi William,
You can already do this. Go to Library and search for what’s of interest. If the specific kind of wildlife isn’t available, feel free to create it in the desktop app. (Library > Custom > New Item > Taxonomy)
Hope this helps.
Best wishes,
Justin

Add a spell checker
It would be handy (for me at least!) to have the ability to spell check the text I enter in any of the notes sections
1 voteGreat, marking this as completed and it will be in the next update to v5.
If you’d like this on other devices/platforms feel free to create a more specific suggestion.

Default "Location Filter" to the current site
When creating a new entry, could the Location Filter be set to default to the current site. Most of the time people doing the same site see birds already on their list. On the odd occasion that someone sees a new species, they would then either have to change the location filter, but I'm guessing this won't be the norm'. New sites would need to default to the next level up (or have no filter).
