Make adding a new observation quicker
- When you add a new observation set the initial count to 1, not zero (which is unlikely to be what is wanted).
- When I tap on the 'add note' button, a text entry box pops up but I have to tap again in the box to be able to enter text (Nexus 4, Android 5.1.1). Must be possible to go straight to text entry surely?

As a standard default "1" is far more logical & would allow faster input
What you record as a count of "0"?

With regard to the original poster's suggestion that the initial count should be set to 1, not blank, by default if not actively entered for a new observation, a refined approach might be to let this be a user-configured setting, ie, let the user specify that when the number is not actively entered, the count is set either as blank or as 1. I agree that for most users, 1 is likely to be the "correct" default, unless they actively specify a higher multiple
